Soul Food

first things first

We came to the US in 2009, leaving behind a (mostly) sweet homeschooling life and some hardships. J. P. was 8, David was 6, and Gabriel was 2 when they flew for the first time. By all standards and available funds we were very poor, but they didn't know it. We traveled light but hopeful. We were not afraid of the challenges of immigrant life. That was good, because there were many. As soon as I figured out basic grocery shopping, but not quite yet a bank account or furniture to sleep in and sit on, I got library cards for everyone. In our few suitcases we had only brought the essential favorites (you know, "Where the Wild Things Are," "The Runaway Bunny," and such). Now we could read all the books we wanted. We were happy. We were rich.
